What is a CPR number?

Everyone who lives in Denmark for a minimum of 3 consecutive months or more is required to have a civil registration number called a CPR number. Having a CPR number means that you are covered by the Danish health insurance scheme. You also need a CPR number to open a Danish bank account, access your health data, borrow books from the library, etc.

How do I apply for a CPR number?

If you live in the City of Copenhagen - or in one of our 37 partner municipalities - you must apply for a CPR number here. It is important that all the required documents are ready before you start the application process. Please note that you cannot submit your application earlier than 4 weeks before you arrive in Denmark.

How long does it take to receive my residence card?

When you can expect to receive your residence card is clearly stated in your residence permit letter. Please note that this can vary. If you do not receive your residence card, please contact SIRI directly.

When will I get my health insurance card (yellow card)?

It takes 2-4 weeks. Your name should be clearly displayed on your letterbox so that you can receive your health insurance card by post. If you haven't received the card after 4 weeks, please contact your local Citizen Service Center (‘Borgerservice’ in Danish).

Can I use the health care system before receiving my health insurance card (yellow card)?

Yes, you can. When your CPR registration is complete, you will be allocated a general practitioner (GP/family doctor). After creating your MitID you will be able to activate your health card app ’Sundhedskortet’, which is your digital yellow health card.

Do I need to have both the physical health insurance card (yellow card) as well as the app?

You can choose to have the digital health insurance card app ’Sundhedskortet’ only. If you do not want the physical card, please make sure to cancel the physical card in the app or on lifeindenmark.dk.

I found a new place to live in Denmark. How do I change my address?

You must always be registered at the address where you live. You must change your address in Denmark using your MitID on lifeindenmark.dk. Please note that if you do not report your change of address, you risk a penalty.

I'm going abroad for a while but planning to return back to Denmark. Do I need to register as have left Denmark?
