What is a CPR registration?

In order to be CPR registered as a resident of Denmark, you must have a place to live or stay, and your stay in Denmark must last longer than three consecutive months. In addition, you must have a residence document from SIRI.

In Denmark, a CPR number is essential for all contact with Danish authorities and other public and private institutions. A CPR number based on residence ensures access to public healthcare.

How do I apply for CPR registration?

If you live in the City of Copenhagen - or in one of our 37 partner municipalities - you must apply for CPR registration here. It is important that all the required documents are ready before you start the application process. Please note that you cannot submit your application earlier than four weeks before you arrive in Denmark.

How long does it take to receive my residence card as a non-EU citizen?

The arrival time of your residence card may vary. In most cases your residence card will get issued from the date of your CPR registration. If you haven't received your card within six weeks of your CPR registration, please make sure to contact either SIRI or the Danish Immigration Service. If you are unsure of which agency your residence permit was issued by, please look at your resident permit letter for the contact information.

When will I get my physical health insurance card (yellow card)?

It takes two to four weeks from your CPR registration date. Your surname or a c/o name should be clearly displayed on your letterbox, so you can receive your physical health insurance card by post. If you haven't received the card after four weeks, please contact your local Citizen Service Center (Borgerservice).

Can I go to a doctor before receiving my health insurance card (yellow card)?

Yes, you can. When your CPR registration is complete, you will be allocated a general practitioner (GP/family doctor). After creating your MitID, you will be able to activate your health card app ’Sundhedskortet’, which is your digital yellow health card.

Do I need to have both the physical health insurance card (yellow card) as well as the app?

You can choose only to have the digital health insurance card app ’Sundhedskortet’. If you do not want the physical card, please make sure to cancel the physical card in the app or on lifeindenmark.dk.

I found a new place to live in Denmark. How do I change my address?

You must always be registered at the address where you live and stay. You can change your address in Denmark using your MitID on lifeindenmark.dk. If you do not have MitID, contact your municipality of residence. Please note, if you do not report your change of address you risk a penalty.

What if I leave Denmark earlier than expected?

I'm going abroad for a while but planning to return back to Denmark. Do I need to deregister from Denmark?
